In 2014 we did a major retro fit on our Tayana 55 while we waited out the cyclone season in New Zealand.  We needed a new mainsail and replacement of the sun covers for both our headsails along with some canvas work.

After doing our research on sail makers in the area we choose Phil Houghton of UK Sailmakers in Whangarei to make our sail and complete our repairs.  We found Phil to be very helpful.  He made suggestions but at the same time listened to our concerns.   Phil also made a point to regularly check in with us providing updates and invited us to stop by his shop anytime to check on the progress of our projects.

He assisted with the creation of a third reef in our new main and even gave us a new reefing line he “just happened to have laying around”.  Phil shared his many years of sailing and sail making experience to help guide us throughout this project.  He did what he said he would, and completed the tasks on time.  That is not always a given in the boating industry.

We were so pleased with the progress on the sails that we decided to have UK Sailmakers make a dingy cover, and repair our dodger, in addition to making covers for our BBQ and outboard engines.

After being able to test the sails on our recent trip to Fiji we are confident that the high quality materials and workmanship have resulted in a product that will serve us well over time.

During the course of our project we witnessed Phil going out of his way to help other boaters with their issues and found him to be a caring man with a great sense of humor.

With their abilities, adaptability, and dedication I feel confident making a recommendation for Phil and his staff at UK Sailmakers in Whangarei.  If you have any questions please feel free to contact me via email list below.

Sincerely,

Larry Anderson
